Dr. Mayada Shahada Honoured with PIMS Education Prize

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mayada Shahada has been awarded with the prestigious PIMS Education Prize, celebrating her outstanding contributions to advancing public awareness and appreciation of the mathematical sciences.

The PIMS Education Prize is awarded annually to individuals who have played a significant role in promoting mathematics education and outreach across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The award highlights efforts that go beyond the classroom to foster engagement, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of mathematics within the broader community. 

Dr. Shahada, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary, has demonstrated a deep commitment to innovative teaching, curriculum development, and inclusive learning practices. Her work focuses on making mathematics accessible, engaging, and relevant to students from diverse backgrounds. 

Since joining the University of Calgary in 2024, Dr. Shahada has focused on supporting early-year students and helping them build confidence in mathematics, emphasizing its accessibility and real-world relevance. Beyond the classroom, she has contributed to outreach initiatives and collaborative projects that strengthen mathematics education, while developing innovative teaching approaches that benefit both students and educators.

Dr. Shahada’s research in combinatorial commutative algebra, combined with her passion for teaching and outreach, exemplifies the spirit of the PIMS Education Prize. Her work continues to inspire students and foster a greater appreciation for the mathematical sciences both locally and internationally.
