Mitacs Globalink Research Internship – India

The PIMS–Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) program provides faculty at eligible PIMS member universities with an opportunity to host high-achieving international undergraduate students for a 12-week, full-time, in-person summer research internship in Canada.

The program aims to support meaningful research experiences for emerging scholars while building lasting research and training connections between PIMS institutions and international universities and students. Internships give students the opportunity to contribute to focused research projects under the supervision of Canadian faculty, while supervisors can engage with talented students who may become future graduate students or research collaborators.

Mitacs provides internship funding and program support, while host supervisors provide research supervision, workspace, institutional access, and the project-specific resources required for the internship. PIMS coordinates the project submission, candidate review and matching process across its network, working with participating institutions and faculty supervisors to facilitate successful placements.

2027 PIMS Faculty Project Call

PIMS invites faculty at eligible Canadian PIMS member universities to submit research projects for summer 2027 through the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI), as part of the new Mitacs–All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) partnership. PIMS expects to support approximately 10 internship placements across its network in 2027.

Each intern undertakes a 12-week, full-time, in-person research project under the supervision of a faculty member at a PIMS host institution in Canada. Mitacs provides the internship funding and program support; no funding contribution is required from the supervisor.

Why participate?

• Work with a high-achieving senior undergraduate from India on a focused 12-week summer research project.
• Develop research and training connections with emerging talent from India.
• Create opportunities to identify and recruit prospective Master's and PhD students.
   

Who can submit a project?

Prospective supervisors must:

• hold an eligible faculty appointment at a participating Canadian PIMS member university;
• be able to supervise international students at their institution;
• be able to host the intern in person for 12 consecutive weeks, with the internship beginning between May 1 and July 31, 2027; and
• provide the research supervision, workspace, institutional access, and project-specific resources required by the intern.
   

Student cohort

The 2027 India student cohort is being offered through the Mitacs partnership with AICTE. Eligible students are drawn from participating Indian institutions and engineering and technology programs. Faculty should propose projects suitable for strong senior undergraduates with relevant quantitative, computational, or mathematical backgrounds. PIMS process

1. Project submission. Faculty submit a short project description through the PIMS project form.
2. Project coordination and matching. PIMS will work with its Site Directors to coordinate projects across the network and the subsequent student-review and matching process. Supervisors will be asked to review candidate information, including potential virtual interviews, and provide a ranking of suitable candidates.
3. Match confirmation. Once a match is confirmed, the host institution will arrange local registration or enrollment and onboarding requirements.
4. Mitacs administration. Mitacs will manage participant setup, award letters, immigration resources, insurance, funding administration, and intern support.

Submission of a project does not guarantee an internship placement. Placements are subject to program capacity and a suitable student–project match.
