Joint BIRS–PIMS–SLMath Graduate Summer School Call for Proposals

Call for proposals

The Banff International Research Station (BIRS), the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), and the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) invite proposals to organize a Joint BIRS–PIMS–SLMath Graduate Summer School, to be held in Summer 2028 at the University of British Columbia Okanagan.

Proposals are welcomed on any area of the mathematical sciences. The selected proposal will form the basis of a two-week graduate summer school designed to provide intensive research training for graduate students from across Canada and the United States.

The program offers organizers the opportunity to develop a high-quality educational experience that introduces participants to an active area of research through lectures, problem sessions, and opportunities for interaction with leading researchers. Summer schools are intended to help prepare graduate students for research by fostering both mathematical development and connections within the broader research community.

Funding will be provided jointly by BIRS, PIMS, and SLMath to support student participation, organizers, and instructors.
Researchers with innovative ideas for graduate-level training in the mathematical sciences are encouraged to submit a proposal.

How to Apply

Proposals must be submitted through the BIRS proposal portal, which opens August 1.

Submissions will automatically be shared with PIMS and SLMath, so a single joint application serves all three institutes. Please use the streamlined joint application template available at the BIRS portal:  https://proposals.birs.ca/ rather than the standard single-institute forms.

Key dates

•  Full application due: October 1, 2026 (no letter of intent required — please submit the full application directly)
•  External review period: October–November 2026
•  Anticipated decision: mid-December 2026

Questions about the joint call or the application template may be directed to: Deanna Needell  co-director-programs@pims.math.ca.
